Below is a sample itinerary based on the trip of a Canadian men’s hockey team to Switzerland in 2024.
Day 1 – Arrival in Zürich and Transfer to Laax
The team’s first destination is Laax in the Swiss Alps. They stop for lunch and sightseeing at Castle Sargans. After settling into the unique Riders Hotel, there’s shopping and a walk through the town of Flims, then a team dinner.
Day 2 – Picturesque Hike and First Game
The Flims/Laax area offers phenomenal hiking opportunities. The route takes us to Lake Cauma and along the Rhine Valley ridge with spectacular views. We take the post bus back into town and have lunch. Siesta time, then the team plays the local Mountain Flyers.
Day 3 – Transfer to Zürich and Carneval
November 11 marks the start of Carnival season for several European cities. Zürich turns into a melting pot of costumes and marching bands. Everybody enjoys the festivities and free time before we meet at the Armoury for a hearty dinner. After that, most of the team resumes celebrating carnival with the locals.
Day 4 – Sightseeing and Fondue
We enjoy a relaxed morning at the Hürlimann Spa, then venture up to the Top of Zürich, the Uetliberg, with great views over the city and the lake. For dinner, we meet up at the one of a kind Frau Gerold’s Garten where we indulge in a traditional cheese fondue.
Day 5 – Visiting a Farm and Hockey Game
After a late morning, we’re having a relaxed brunch at Jucker Farm, then visit the Swiss Air Force Museum on a private tour. In the evening, the team plays a friendly against EHC Hombrechtikon.
Day 6 – Excursion to Appenzell and Ebenalp
Our day trip takes us to central Switzerland and into the mountains. We enjoy a mountaineer’s lunch at Ebenalp, then head to the quaint town of Appenzell for a stroll. On the way back, we stop at Säntis Park for a Swiss sauna and spa experience.
Day 7 – Trip to Basel and Game with BBQ
While part of the group rents bicycles and pedals alongside Lake Zürich, the other half drives to the historical City of Basel, which is only an hour away. After the evening hockey game, the team is invited to a farmhouse BBQ hosted by the opponent.
Day 8 – Strolling the City, Game and Team Dinner
The day is kept free for shopping, people watching and exploring Old Town. In the late afternoon, we play this trip’s last game against the Smilies from Cologne. The teams mingle over hearty Swiss food and lager in the Rheinfelder beer hall.
